Hānai Niu: Adopt a Niu!

  • Waiʻanae Coast Comprehensive Health Center 86-260 Farrington Highway Waianae, HI, 96792 United States (map)

As you know, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center - 'Elepaio Social Services has been leading the Waianae Community alongside the Niunow Hui. Collectively they have been safeguarding Coconut from the infamous Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB). While Prioritizing Food Security, Conservation of Niu and Culture revitalization. It has been an ongoing movement throughout Hawaii as the spread of CRB is at our door steps. We have strengthened the movement ten-folds from farmers to policy but there is still work to be done. By doing so, we are gifting out young coconut trees to community members who are willing to take care of it by adopting integrated pest management skills and applying their love. We are excited to also directly address purchasing power barriers that enable the Waianae community to grow food diminishing the struggle to have to buy plants.  Ultimately our work sits in this area of building food system resiliency through the same Canoe Plants that fed generations of our Kupuna (Ancestors/Elders).
