Aulii Mitchell, the kumu hula of Hālau `o Kahiwahiwa, is deeply rooted in the sacredness and dance of the ancient hula, having been formally trained under his mother and grandfather, Charles Kahiwahiwa Cash, and Harrite Aana Cash-Mitchell. Today, kumu Aulii teaches in Kaniahiku in the district of Puna on the island of Hawai`i and at Kīpuka in Kaka`ako on the island of O`ahu.
He returns every year to Aotearoa to teach his students of Hālau o Moananuiakiwa. His works include over four decades of experience and research in the creation, preservation, and dissemintation of a once lost genre of hula, the “Hula Ki`i” or Hawaiian Puppetry, now in itʻs revival in the 21st Century. Kumu Aulii now offers a basic hula class here at Kīpuka on August 28th from 1-3pm. This class is offered noa, free of any restrictions, to all interested in learning. Kumu Aulii’ s reverence for the hula and his hope in sharing these basic steps will lead others to discover the profound cultural significance of the dance of Nā Hawai`i, the Hawaiian people.
The class is offered free, and donations are welcome. Space is limited to 12 participants, register here
